They taught this gave them the ability and authority to interpret God's word. Since the "New Testament" was in the infancy of codification, this gave them great latitude to make claims and look to unique instances in the "Old Testament" for anecdotal illustrations to back their claims. This opened up many opportunities for heretical teachings.
