In the Bible we learn that God is a God of new things:

The SIMPLE, NATURAL, and PLAIN meaning of the text, LITERAL where possible.

  • A new SONG. Psalm 40:3
  • A new COVENANT. Jeremiah 31:31 (Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:25)
  • New MERCIES. Lamentations 3:23
  • A new SPIRIT. Ezekiel 11:19
  • New WINE, COVENANT, COMMANDMENT.
  • New BIRTH. 1 Peter 1:3
  • A new NAME. Revelation 3:12
  • A new CREATION. 2 Corinthians 5:17
  • A new HEAVEN, EARTH and JERUSALEM. Revelation 21 (Is.65:17, 2 Peter 3:13)

1. OPEN YOUR EYES. “See…”

Principle: God’s kingdom work is a spiritual work and thus it can only be seen with spiritual eyes.

  • 2 Kings 6:8-23

2. GOD IS WORKING. “I am doing…”

Who is this God that has promised to do a new thing?

  • V.1 Created, Redeemed and Summoned.
  • V.3 Yahweh, Elohim, Holy One, Savior.
  • V.15 King.

3. ALWAYS DOING NEW THINGS. “…a new thing.”

V.18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past”

Q: What were the “former things”?

A: God’s miraculous work among His chosen people.

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13b-14

I tell you, now is the time of God's favor, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2b

Q: What was the “new thing”?

A: The restoration of His people.

The Historical Setting: Isaiah’s prophecies took place from about 740-680 BC. The northern 10 tribes of Israel were taken into captivity by the Assyrians in 722/721 BC. Isaiah chapter 39 predicts the Babylonian captivity (under Nebuchadnezzar) of the southern two tribes of Israel in 605 B.C. (Battle of Carchemish). Chapter 43 of Isaiah predicts the return of the exiles as Cyrus the Persian is used of God in 539 BC to liberate Israel from the Babylonians.

What “new thing” does God want to do today?

"No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him"  1 Corinthians 2:9
