Contentment PDF Print E-mail

Good morning,

I need to apologize for not blogging earlier in the week as I said I would in last weeks blog. The shortened work week got away from me...and then the Turkey...and then...    We have enjoyed the week with having our two oldest sons home from college.  A quiet but grateful Thanksgiving together.

Tomorrow I preach on contentment.  Imagine the fact that on "black Friday" millions of people and billions of dollars are spent shopping for Christmas.  We live in a culture materially blessed  by our Lord Jesus Christ.   We we live in a country that has experienced more material blessing than any nation in any time period in human history.  And yet, in my estimation our blessing is destroying our need for God.  Who needs God when you can buy happiness?  Or can we???  No matter how much we have, our sinful nature (the flesh) will always want more.  Left unchecked by the Holy Spirit, and without a firm understanding of God's Word and the principles of contentment, we will never be satisfied.

True contentment comes in being satisfied with what you have, knowing that our existence on planet earth is temporary, and living in a real relationship with Jesus Christ who alone satisfies our deepest longings and needs.

Excellent message yesterday. Thank you for reminding me of how to appreciate what I have-an incredible wife, two great sons with another on the way and, well, everything. Besides the Stones "Satisfaction" I was reminded of Sheryl Crowe's lyric "It's not about having what you want/It's about wanting what you have"
There is one area that we as Christians should never be content with. That is our quest to lead as many people to Christ as possible. We must always strive foreward in this pursuit.

Sorry I didn't make it to church on Sunday, But I have a question for you.
Why is it that as soon as a close friend or relative die we finally see how short our life is on earth, and that all we really need is a good relationship with God to have contentment.

Linda,
Great observation about life and death. It seems to me that when someone close to us dies it becomes a wake up call that brings life back into perspective. We all get stuck in "auto mode" with our schedules, routine and basic life responsibilities. You are right - true contentment only comes in our relationship with Jesus Christ. James 4:13-17
