The Missional Heart of God PDF Print E-mail

Dear friends,

I have begun a series of messages preaching through the book of Jonah.  Yesterday began that series with the question of obedience for us as followers of Jesus Christ.  Will we obey the great commission (Matthew 28:18-20) to go and make disciples?   If so, making disciples starts with winning the lost to Christ.  While on the one hand I know many of us feel inadequate and ill equipped for evangelism, on the other hand we need to take advantage of the tools and resources that are available to equip us.  Then we need to PRAY and look for opportunities to share the love fo God, the person of Jesus Christ and the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

Missions and evangelism begin at home with our families (passing the faith on to the next generation), and extends to the places where we live, work and play.  Missions must also include the nations of the world (Revelation 5:9).  Toward this end I want to encourage you to check out our missions webpage and missions board at church.  I want to challenge you to be informed about who we as a church family support on the mission fields of the world.  Pray for them, read their newsletters, send them an email or letter, give finanically to the work of missions.

What about Jonah?  I am curious as to your response to these messages and passages.  I have divided the book into four messages coinciding with its four chapters.  Yesterday we addressed the issue of obedience. This next Sunday we will look at Jonah's prayer from the belly of the fish.  We will address the topic of repentance for not obeying the Lord in the area of following His direction for our lives and our witness.  I am emphasizing the fact that this book is about the missional heart of God for lost people more than it is about Jonah or living in an extremely large fish.  Nonetheless, I am still curious about what you think about the possibility of living in the belly of a large fish for three days.  What do you think?

Have a warm week in the Lord and in the work of His kingdom!

I believe God kept Shradach, Meshach and Abednego (as well as Daniel) alive in burning flames. Therefore, I have NO trouble believing He kept Jonah alive for three days in the belly of a fish. Sometimes He employed drastic, radical, or extreme measures to catch the attention of human beings. Even today, we often experience His provision of "vacations for contemplation" (T.Olson, Sermon notes 2/4/07) of His will and our obedience or surrender to it. Fortunately, they do not include bellies of large fish (to my knowledge anyway).
