The Person of the Holy Spirit PDF Print E-mail

Dear friends,

I have begun a three week preaching series on the Holy Spirit.  Last Sunday I addressed the "place" of the Holy Spirit and focused on the reality of the Holy Spirit as a person actually living or residing in us as Christ followers.  This Sunday I will be preaching on the "person" of the Holy Spirit (John 16:5-16) and then on the 27th of May preach on the "power" of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-4).

My whole desire in this brief series is to help us as Christians understand that the Holy Spirit actually is a person to whom we can relate as we do real human persons AND to be able to draw upon His power for living my life here on planet earth.

What questions or issues come to mind for you when you think of the Holy Spirit?

In the third century, the Montanists claimed a special and unique access to God by and through the Holy Spirit. They taught this gave them the ability and authority to interpret God's word. Since the "New Testament" was in the infancy of codification, this gave them great latitude to make claims and look to unique instances in the "Old Testament" for anecdotal illustrations to back their claims. This opened up many opportunities for heretical teachings. ( http://www.ntcanon.org/Montanism.shtml )

Please place this early church heresy in context with the church of 2007.
