Hi ho, Hi ho, It's off to work we go...
Our first task of the day was making it to breakfast at 6:30 a.m. Each of us was able to manage this!
The main points of our morning’s orientation were
1. We should put away our expectations of this experience and let the Lord determine what it will be for each of us, good advice for a team that comes with three different perspectives (those who have never been here, those who were here only before Katrina, and those who have also worked here since Katrina.)
2. Although our projects are important, the most important part of this mission is building relationships and bringing Jesus Christ to the community in which we’re working.
The majority of the team members worked today on a house owned by Mr. Mike. (This home is only two houses away from one the 2005 team gutted only three months after Katrina. That house now sits boarded up and empty.) Much of what was done today would be considered “finishing” work, and included putting on siding, cleaning, painting, and moving dirt. Jorge really took our orientation seriously, since he was teaching Mrs. Mike how to salsa dance after he finished spackling nail holes!
Our evening included a “rousing” time of worship at Castle Rock following dinner, with singing and prayer. The highlights were obviously Pastor Dave singing and playing jazz worship music, accompanied by Pastor John Gerhardt on the saxaphone, and the most adorable worship team ever (Pastor John’s two young sons, six and nine years old) belting out the congregational songs.
We would like your prayers for
-good health for our team members. We have a few cold and flu symptoms hanging around.
-safe travel for the rest of our team, as well as good connections; they’ll be arriving here Tuesday evening.
-helping our team be instrumental in “making this a neighborhood where kids can safely ride their bikes.”
